When COVID-19 hit Windsor, many events planned for this fall were cancelled. But organizers at the Windsor-Essex branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) aren’t letting the pandemic stop them.

The branch is encouraging the community to participate in several virtual events this September as part of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

They include a Zoom interview with Kevin Hines, who developed Suicide: The Ripple Effect, as well as a candlelight vigil for World Suicide Prevention Day and a virtual version of the annual Suicide Prevention Awareness Walk.

“Social connectedness and whatever way that can happen is more important now than ever,” said Kerri Hill, lead for community engagement at the Windsor-Essex CMHA branch. “Meet up with people via FaceTime or Zoom … it’s beneficial to stay connected to others.”

Participants are encouraged to wear yellow t-shirts for suicide prevention or to buy a special purple shirt from the organization’s website this year.

A full calendar and registration links for this month’s events can be found on the CMHA website and Facebook page.
